Technician, Glassware and Lab Support

Salary range: $21-$24/hr

Position Summary

The successful candidate for the Technician, Glassware and Lab Support position will report directly to the Manager, and will provide general lab support for the Research and Development team.

Primary areas of responsibility include but are not limited to: inventory and replenishment of clean laboratory glassware and supplies, sterilization of lab materials, and disposal of microbial waste, taking inventory, ordering and restocking common consumables used in the lab.

Essential Role Responsibilities

Daily

    • Support laboratory staff by maintaining a constant supply of common lab supplies and clean, sterile glassware for use.
    • Demonstrate good communication skills and strive to understand the needs of each laboratory group.
    • Daily pickup of dirty glassware and materials from lab areas. Wash, sterilize, and redistribute glassware to storage locations.
    • Daily replenishment and sterilization of common lab supplies, including but not limited to sterile stocks of disposable labware.
    • Sterilization of lab materials as requested including: media, buffers, and equipment.
    • Organize, maintain, and inventory commonly used laboratory supplies and chemicals. Place orders for supplies as needed.
    • Perform and document required testing according to standard operating procedures including but not limited to: daily and monthly autoclave testing and monthly water quality testing.

Lab cleaning

    • Maintain a high level of cleanliness and sanitation in the laboratory, practices good housekeeping at all times.
    • Lead efforts to help keep the lab organized and operating efficiently.
    • Ensure that glass wash area, buffer preparation room, and stock areas are clean and uncluttered.

 Waste Handling

    • Follow appropriate procedures for handling microbial waste.
    • Frequent collection and sterilization of microbial waste prior to disposal in compliance with all state and local regulations.

 Inventory Management

    • Take bi-weekly inventory of common consumables.
    • Order common consumables.
    • Restock common consumable.
    • Ensure stock room stays organized.

 General

    • Follow well defined work procedures and instructions.
    • Appropriate escalation of concerns/problems to manager.

Job Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications

    • HS diploma or GED required.
    • Associate or bachelor’s degree within a science field highly recommended.
    • 1 year relevant experience required.

    • Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to consistently meet deadlines.
    • Collaborative work style with good communication skills.
    • Professional and courteous.
    • Willingness to learn new skills.
    • Must be able to use a computer and possess basic skills in Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Outlook, and Excel).
    • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
    • Work Overtime, as required.

Physical Demands

    • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk; reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel. 
    • Must be able to lift, push, and pull 30-40 pounds consistently; may be required to lift 40 lbs unassisted.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
